COMPUMED, INC. PARTICIPATES IN 7TH EUROPEAN CONGRESS ON CLINICAL AND ECONOMIC ASPECTS OF OSTEOPOROSIS AND OSTEOARTHRITIS COMPANY'S ARTHRITIS APPLICATION FEATURED IN POSTER PRESENTATION
LOS ANGELES, Apr 03, 2007. CompuMed, Inc. (CMPD.OB) -- a medical informatics company leading the development of advanced imaging technology for cost-effective analysis and monitoring -- presented clinical data on its arthritis application at the 7th European Congress on Clinical and Economic Aspects of Osteoporosis and Osteoarthritis (ECCEO), held March 28-31 in Porto, Portugal.
With about 4,000 attendees, the annual ECCEO meeting is the largest gathering of its kind in Europe for professionals in the fields of osteoporosis and osteoarthritis. The meeting features the latest advancements in epidemiology, pathogenesis, prevention, and treatment. It includes plenary lectures, oral communications and poster sessions drawn from more than 500 abstracts submitted. The goal is to contribute to the effort to make osteoporosis and osteoarthritis diseases of the past.
"We were pleased to be selected to participate at such a prestigious meeting," said CompuMed CEO Jerry McLaughlin. "Our recent $2 million private placement will provide us with the resources to accelerate development of new CAD applications, such as arthritis diagnosis and monitoring."
CompuMed's poster presentation was entitled, "Automatic Computerized Phalangeal Joint Space Width Measurement in Females." The objective of the Company's study was to perform automatic computerized measurement of phalangeal joint space width, and compare the results to manual measurements in 100 female subjects. Quantitative assessment of joint space width aids the diagnosis and monitoring of both osteoarthritis and inflammatory arthritis. There are currently no cost-effective methods to evaluate these disease criteria. Consequently, clinicians have to rely on patient symptoms or tedious, manual procedures. The CompuMed computer aided diagnostic (CAD) application is readily accessible, since it utilizes widely available x-ray technology.
McLaughlin added, "The advent of costly biotech drugs for treating arthritis presents healthcare providers with a mandate for monitoring this disease, which affects more than 40 million Americans. Our arthritis application will be an aid to pharmaceutical companies and clinicians alike."
The arthritis application is a spin-off of CompuMed's OsteoGram CAD system to screen and diagnose osteoporosis -- a global disease that affects more than 200 million people worldwide. The newer DICOM OsteoGram was developed to take advantage of the growing market for digital x-ray and mammography equipment, as well as networking systems. CompuMed licenses the DICOM OsteoGram software to manufacturers of digital imaging equipment for placement at the point-of-sale.
